WordPress Core - A picture is worth a thousand words
When dealing with WordPress, one of the keys for a developer is understanding the WordPress page lifecycle.
Understanding this makes it easier to know when to properly integrate various hooks and filters so that they don't affect the functionality of the application and maintain speed and performance.
If you've developed websites using other frameworks, then you're probably familiar with the page request lifecycle, although there are differences between different platforms.
The WordPress action and filter model is powerful but can seem complicated to people with other backgrounds. The WordPress Codex provides a great article on this, but if you prefer more visual methods, then Rarst's diagram is a great breakdown of the core application lifecycle with a high-level overview.
